Now I know some of you are thinking wait what? I thought you graduated in May! And well technically I did but didn’t … seem a little confusing? Well let me try and explain.
Back in May I hadn’t finished my degree. I got to be apart of the NYU commencement ceremony though because I only had to complete four more credits over the summer.
The last class I had to do involved writing my final dissertation¬†aka a 25 – 30 page nightmare. And since I was a media studies major, for my final thesis, I wrote a paper on Disney’s representation of femininity ¬†… a case study of Disney’s Mulan. Wanna read some of it?
Here’s a little snippet from my conclusion – “Ultimately, contrary to popular conception, Mulan is not a movie about female empowerment. ¬†It is just another Disney movie that hegemonizes an old-fashioned view of women … If we’re going to allow media to have such a big influence in our children’s lives, it is only right to also incorporate media awareness classes to their education. Children must be taught new ways of looking and dealing with media influence …”
